Mounjaro

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a weight loss treatment that comes in the form of a weekly self-injectable pen. It is a medication licensed to be used for weight loss and to treat type 2 diabetes.

The active ingredient in Mounjaro works on two different hormone receptors in the body: glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP).

GLP-1 helps to regulate blood sugar levels to help make you feel less hungry and reduce cravings. It also slows down the emptying of the stomach to keep you feeling fuller for longer.

GIP regulates energy balance in brain and fat cells, which will further enhance the GLP-1 effect of suppressing your appetite and improving sugar control.

By working on these two receptors, Mounjaro has been shown to have greater weight loss potential than medicines that work on GLP-1 alone.

Mounjaro should be used alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity to manage weight loss. You inject Mounjaro in your stomach area, thigh or upper arm once a week using the injection pen and a small needle. It is a very easy process and comes with full instructions and our pharmacy team are on hand if you need any further support.

You must follow the dosage schedule as instructed by your prescriber. This allows your body to get used to the medicine and give you the best chance to achieve your weight loss goals.

Usually, you start with a dose of 2.5 mg which will increase every four weeks until you reach your maximum maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg or the lowest effective dose which works for you. The dose increases or maintenance doses can vary for each individual and will be assessed by our practitioners.

Clinical trials have shown that patients could achieve at least 20% weight loss after using tirzepatide for 72 weeks (18 months) when combined with healthy lifestyle changes.

Common side effects include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation. These are mainly seen with dose increases and tend to settle with time.

Other common side effects could include: fatigue, feeling lightheaded, excess wind (flatulence), gallstones, gastroesophageal reflux, injection site reactions, hair loss and hypoglycaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Please read the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your medicine for full details of side effects and how to use Mounjaro.

As there is limited data on this medicine, you should not use tirzepatide if you are pregnant, and you should stop taking Mounjaro at least one month before trying to get pregnant.

You should not use this medicine if you are breast-feeding as it is unknown if it passes into breast milk.

It is essential that you give us a full medical history and details of any conditions or other medicines you are taking when you fill out our online questionnaire.

As Mounjaro is a new weight loss medicine available in the UK, it will be closely monitored for any adverse effects.

Mounjaro should start working straight away, but it could take several weeks until it has a noticeable effect on regulating your blood sugar level and impacting your appetite and eating habits. It is important to remember this is a long-term medication.

If you are using another injectable weight-loss drug, you must make this clear on your assessment as to which one that is. You will need to wait 1 month before switching to Mounjaro. This is called the ‘washout’ period and gives the body time for the first drug to leave the system. All patients using Mounjaro for the first time will start with 2.5mg.

Wegovy

The active ingredient in Wegovy is semaglutide. This weight loss treatment comes in the form of a weekly self-injectable pen. It is a medication licensed for weight loss and to treat type 2 diabetes.

The active ingredient in Wegovy is semaglutide. This weight loss treatment comes in the form of a weekly self-injectable pen. It is a medication licensed for weight loss and to treat type 2 diabetes.

Semaglutide works by acting on GLP-1 receptors which control the response to fullness and appetite.

GLP-1 helps to regulate blood sugar levels to help make you feel less hungry and reduce cravings. It also slows down the emptying of the stomach to keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Wegovy should be used alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity to manage weight loss. You inject Wegovy in your stomach area, thigh or upper arm once a week using the injection pen and a small needle. You must follow the dosage schedule as instructed by your prescriber. This allows your body to get used to the medicine and give you the best chance to achieve your weight loss goals.

Usually you start with a dose of 0.25 mg, which will increase every four weeks until you reach your maximum maintenance dose of 2.4mg, or the lowest effective dose which works for you. The dose increases or maintenance doses can vary for each individual and will be assessed by our practitioners.

Clinical trials have shown that patients could achieve at least 15% weight loss after using semaglutide for 68 weeks, when combined with healthy lifestyle changes.

Wegovy should start working straight away, but it could take several weeks until it has a noticeable effect on regulating your blood sugar level and impacting your appetite and eating habits. It is important to remember this is a long-term medication.

Wegovy and Mounjaro are both weekly injection pens and work in similar ways to aid weight loss. Mounjaro has proven more effective in clinical trials as it works on GLP-1 and GIP hormones, whereas Wegovy only works on GLP-1.

However, Mounjaro is a new medicine in the UK so we do not have as much safety data on it compared to other medicines in the long term. Deciding if or which medicine is right for you will depend on different factors, which we asses during your consultation. If you are already on Wegovy and losing weight, we recommend you keep using it.

FAQs and support

Everyone is different and it is an ongoing process. Your initial assessment questionnaire will help determine the best treatment option for you. Depending on your choice of medication, it will involve a course which starts off at a low dose and increases periodically to ensure maximum efficacy and minimising the side effects. We will assess after 3 months and book you in for a chat with our clinician if there is no improvement at this point. We recommend following the program for at least six months to see significant results.

As with all medicines, there is a chance of side-effects occuring. All of the medicines we provide have undergone clinical trials to establish long term suitability for long term use. Some people taking GLP-1 medications do experience side effects, however these are typically mild and go away after a week or so. The most common side effects are related to an upset stomach – e.g., nausea, diarrhoea, gas. Please read the leaflet for more information.

It is important to take this medication as an add-on to lifestyle and dietary changes. This medication should not be relied upon solely to lose weight. The medication will take time to become effective and is considered a long-term medication. Stopping too soon will reduce the effectiveness of the weight loss, but continuing with the lifestyle and diet changes is key.

If you are overweight, losing weight can help prevent your risk of many chronic diseases and add years to your life expectancy. It can also alleviate specific conditions such as joint pain and sleep apnoea.
